How to make a Cricut SVG from an image

  1. Add your design. Dark artwork on a light background works best.
  2. Stay in Cut mode. It picks the light/dark threshold for you. If thin lines break apart, untick Pick threshold automatically and move Threshold right; if letters fill in, move it left. Tick Invert for a light design on a dark background.
  3. Clean for the blade. This page starts with Remove specks at 5 px and Smoothing at 6, a good balance for vinyl. Zoom in with Outlines on: every outline is a line your blade will follow.
  4. Download SVG.

Import it into Cricut Design Space

  1. On the Design Space canvas, click Upload, then Upload Image, then Browse, and pick the .svg file.
  2. Name it, add tags if you like, and click Upload. SVGs skip the clean-up screens that PNGs go through.
  3. Select it in Recent uploads and click Add to Canvas. It arrives as a single layer.
  4. Set the size with the lock on, so it scales evenly, then click Make. Mirror the mat for iron-on (HTV).

On a Silhouette, open the SVG in Silhouette Studio (Designer Edition or higher imports SVG) and the cut lines appear straight away.

Why it cuts in one clean pass

Some converters fake holes by stacking a white shape on a black one. Design Space then cuts both, and the inside of every O, A and B drops out as a separate piece. The SVG here is one compound path: counters are real holes in the same shape, and a dot inside a ring is its own island. Nothing overlaps, so each edge is cut once and there is nothing to weed twice.

Weeding and minimum detail

  • About 1 mm is the floor for adhesive vinyl at your final size; thick materials such as glitter iron-on, felt or cardstock need closer to 2 mm. Thinner strokes tear or lift while weeding.
  • Raise Remove specks until isolated dots you do not want are gone. Each one would otherwise be a tiny piece to pick out.
  • Lower the node count with a little more Smoothing. Fewer nodes means less blade chatter and cleaner corners.
  • Add a weeding box. Draw a square around the design in Design Space and attach it, so the waste vinyl lifts away in one sheet.
  • Several colours? Switch to Logo mode with Cut-out, no overlaps layers: each colour becomes its own layer, ready for layered vinyl.

Questions people ask

Will this SVG work in Cricut Design Space?

Yes. It is a standard SVG with a viewBox and one even-odd path, which Design Space imports as a single cut layer with the holes intact. It also opens in Silhouette Studio Designer Edition, Brother CanvasWorkspace and Inkscape.

PNG or SVG for Cricut: which is better?

SVG. Design Space has to guess the cut line from a PNG, and you clean up the background by hand. An SVG already is the cut line, so it imports ready to cut, scales to any size without jagged edges, and keeps letter holes intact.

Why is my design filled in or broken up?

That is the threshold. Untick Pick threshold automatically, then drag Threshold right to count more of the image as ink (joins broken lines) or left to count less (opens filled-in letters).

What is the smallest detail I can cut?

About 1 mm at the final size for standard adhesive vinyl, and nearer 2 mm for glitter iron-on, felt and cardstock. Raise Remove specks to drop tiny pieces, and simplify very fine artwork before tracing.

Can I make a multi-colour layered SVG for vinyl?

Yes. Switch to Logo mode and keep Layers on Cut-out, no overlaps. Each colour becomes its own shape that does not overlap the others, which Design Space shows as separate layers to cut from different vinyl.
