How to convert an InPage file

  1. Open the file. Click Open and pick the .inp file. The text is read in your browser.
  2. Check. The Unicode Urdu appears on the right, paragraph by paragraph. Any code we could not identify shows as .
  3. Use it. Copy the text or download a .docx or .txt. In Word, pick a Nastaliq font for the familiar look.

If you still have InPage 2000 or 2002 open, you can also select the text there, copy it and paste it into the left box. On an English-language PC it arrives as symbols, on an Urdu-language PC as Arabic-looking letters; the converter recognises both.

What “beta” means here

InPage stores each Urdu character as a two-byte code that its maker never documented. Our table combines four independent, reverse-engineered converters, and we checked it against a real InPage file: all 39 letters, the diacritics and the common punctuation decode the same as the reference. Two things are still open:

  • Rare codes. About twenty rarely used codes have no agreed meaning. They show as rather than a guess.
  • Brackets, quotes and numbers. InPage stores some of these in visual (right-to-left) order. We flip digit runs back and follow the majority on quotes; check dates and amounts.

Questions people ask

How do I convert InPage to Unicode?

Open your .inp file with the Open button (or drag it onto the converter). The Urdu text appears as Unicode on the right; copy it or download it as .txt or .docx. You can also paste text copied from InPage 2000 or 2002.

Which InPage versions work?

InPage 1.x, 2000 and 2002 files are read and decoded. InPage 3 and later already use Unicode: text copied from them is passed through unchanged, and reading InPage 3 files is experimental because we have not been able to test one yet.

Why does text copied from InPage paste as strange symbols?

Older InPage versions do not use Unicode. Each Urdu letter is stored as a private two-byte code, so other programs show symbols such as ‚ƒ„ or Arabic-looking garbage. The converter maps those codes back to the right Urdu letters.

Is formatting kept?

No. The converter extracts the text: paragraphs and tabs are kept, but fonts, colours, text boxes and images are not. Paste the result into Word or Google Docs and choose a Nastaliq font such as Jameel Noori Nastaleeq or Noto Nastaliq Urdu.

Why is this marked beta?

InPage’s maker never published its character codes. Our table combines four independent converters and was checked letter for letter against a real InPage file, but a few rare symbols and the direction of some brackets and quotes are still uncertain. Unknown codes are shown as so you can spot them.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The .inp file is read in your browser and never sent anywhere.
