How to convert a bank statement PDF to Excel
- Download your statement from online banking as a PDF.
- Drop it on the box above, or tap Choose PDF. It is read on your device and the progress shows page by page.
- Look at the balance check. A green tick means every row adds up to the balance printed on the statement.
- Fix any highlighted row in the grid if you need to. The check updates as you type.
- Tap Download Excel or Download CSV.
Why every row is checked
Most converters hand you a spreadsheet and a note telling you to check it. That leaves you comparing hundreds of lines by eye. This converter does the checking: it starts from the opening balance, applies each transaction in turn and compares the result with the running balance your bank printed. When a row does not reconcile you see which one and by how much, which usually points straight at a misread amount or a row that wrapped oddly.
Statements that print no running balance, such as some US statements that list deposits and withdrawals in separate sections, are checked as a whole: opening balance plus money in minus money out must equal the closing balance.
Why your statement is never uploaded
A bank statement holds your name, address, account number and a month of your spending. Upload-based converters keep a copy on a server you cannot see, often with a one-page free limit. Here the PDF is read by pdf.js running in your own browser tab, in a background worker, and the spreadsheet is built on your device too. You can check it: open your browser’s developer tools, watch the Network tab, and convert a statement. Nothing is sent.
What it reads
| Layout | Typical columns | Seen in |
|---|---|---|
| Withdrawals and deposits | Date, Description, Withdrawals, Deposits, Balance | US checking and credit union statements |
| Paid out and paid in | Date, Payment type and details, Paid out, Paid in, Balance | UK current accounts (UK guide) |
| Narration and closing balance | Date, Narration, Chq./Ref.No., Value Dt, Withdrawal Amt., Deposit Amt., Closing Balance | Indian banks (India guide) |
| Debit and credit | Date, Particulars, Debit, Credit, Balance (with CR / DR) | Pakistan, India and many others |
| Signed amount | Date, Description, Amount (−/+), Balance | Online banks and card accounts |
| Sections | Deposits, then Withdrawals, each with Date, Description, Amount | Some large US banks |
It also copes with descriptions that wrap over two or three lines, dates printed only once per day, balances printed only at the end of the day, statements listed newest first, and dates written as 10/03, 03 Oct 26, 03-OCT-2026 or 2026-10-03. Want CSV specifically? See bank statement PDF to CSV. Not sure the output is right? Read how to check a converted statement.
Bookkeeping from supplier bills rather than the bank? Convert invoices and receipts to Excel with the same checks: it reads invoice PDFs and receipt photos on your device and confirms the items plus tax equal the total.
Questions people ask
Is my bank statement uploaded anywhere?
No. The PDF is opened by your own browser and read on your device with pdf.js. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and once the page has loaded you can switch off Wi-Fi and the converter still works. The readout under the balance check counts the network requests made after you add a file; it should say 0.
How do I know the conversion is right?
Every row is checked. The converter starts from the opening balance, adds each credit and subtracts each debit, and compares the result with the running balance printed on the statement. Rows that do not add up are highlighted with the exact difference, so you know where to look instead of re-checking the whole sheet.
Which banks does it work with?
It does not depend on a list of banks. It finds the transaction table from its header row (Date, Description, Debit or Withdrawals, Credit or Deposits, Balance and their usual synonyms) and reads the columns by position. It handles US-style withdrawal and deposit columns, UK paid in / paid out layouts, Indian narration and closing balance layouts, fixed-width statements, single signed Amount columns and statements listed newest first. If a layout is not recognised, it tells you rather than guessing.
Is there a page limit?
No. Text-based PDFs of any length convert for free, as often as you like. Long statements just take a little longer, and the progress readout shows how far along it is.
Does it work with scanned statements?
Not yet. A scan or photo has no text layer to read, and the converter will tell you when that is the case. Reading scanned statements with OCR is planned for Pro. Most banks let you download the original PDF from online banking, and that version converts here.
My statement PDF has a password. Can I still convert it?
Yes. Enter the password when asked. It is used by your browser to open the file and is never sent anywhere. Many Indian and Pakistani banks lock e-statements with a password based on your name, date of birth or account number.
Can I export to QuickBooks or Xero?
Download the Excel or CSV file and import it with your accounting software’s bank statement import. Direct QBO and OFX export are coming in Pro.
