PaddleOCR PP-OCRv5 · 12.2 MB. 100.0% of characters right in our tests. How we measured

Drop images, a screenshot or a photo

Take a photo of the text

Hold the page flat and fill the frame. Good light matters more than resolution.

Drop an image, paste a screenshot or take a photo, and the text appears in a box you can edit. Copy it, or download it as a .txt or Word .docx file. Got a table? Switch to Table → Excel and get rows and columns you can fix before downloading .xlsx or .csv.

Nothing is uploaded. The image is read by a model that runs inside your browser, so it works for private documents and keeps working on a slow connection once the model is cached.

What it reads well, and what it doesn’t

Printed text reads best: screenshots, documents, signs, receipts, book pages and slides. Typed English comes out at 100.0% of characters right on our test images, Hindi at 99.7% and Arabic at 95.7%. Urdu in Nastaliq is harder for every OCR engine; we measured 71% and say so plainly below.

Handwriting is not supported well. Very small, blurry or curved text (a bottle label, a photo taken at an angle) loses accuracy. Lines the reader was unsure about are drawn in amber, so you know where to look.

Batch: many images at once

Select or drop several images together. They queue up and are read one by one; each gets its own result. Download all of them as one text file, one Word file with a heading per image, or a ZIP with one .txt per image. In table mode, every image becomes a sheet in one Excel workbook.

How to do it

  1. Pick the language of the text (we guess from your browser).
  2. Drop images, paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V, or press Camera.
  3. The first time, the reading model downloads (about 12 MB) and is cached for next time.
  4. Check the text. Click a box on the image to jump to that line.
  5. Copy it, or download .txt or Word .docx.

How accurate it is (measured, not claimed)

We render known text in each script as images in five styles: a clean screenshot, small 15 px text, a photo (rotated, soft focus, uneven light, JPEG), a dark-mode screenshot and a rough photo (low contrast, blurrier, more tilt, heavy JPEG). Each engine reads them in a browser, and we count the characters it gets right (100% minus the character error rate). The default engine for each script is the one with fewer character errors (within half a point, the one with more whole words right).

Measured 2026-11-03 on Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-14700KF (28 threads), headless Chromium, no WebGPU adapter, cross-origin isolated. Real photos have not been validated for this tool. Generated images are easier than real photos of real paper, so treat these as a ceiling for printed text, not a promise. Tesseract was partly trained on font-rendered text, which may flatter it on generated images. The test text and the script that draws the images are in the project repository.

Private by design

The image is read by an open-source model that runs in your browser (PaddleOCR or Tesseract, both Apache-2.0). It downloads once, about 12 MB for most scripts, and is cached for next time. Your images, the text and your downloads stay on your device: there is no upload, no account and no log of what you read.

Questions people ask

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The reading model is downloaded to your browser once and runs on your own phone or computer. The image, the text and the files you download never leave your device. You can switch off your internet after the model has loaded and it still works.

Is it free? Is there a limit?

It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no daily cap. Because your own device does the work, there is no server cost for us to recover. Add as many images as you like; they are read one after another.

Which file types can I use?

PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP images, screenshots pasted with Ctrl+V, and photos from your camera. For a PDF, take a screenshot of the page or export it as an image first.

How accurate is it?

On our generated test images (clean screenshots, small text, phone-style photos and dark mode), the default engines got 100.0% of characters right in English, 99.7% in Hindi, 95.7% in Arabic and 71% in Urdu Nastaliq. Real photos vary; a sharp, straight, well-lit photo matters more than resolution.

Can it read handwriting?

Only neat block letters, and not reliably. The models are trained on printed text. We would rather tell you that than give you a page of wrong words.

Does it keep the layout?

It keeps lines and paragraph breaks, and right-to-left text stays right to left in Word. It does not rebuild columns, fonts or images. For tables, use Table → Excel.

Which OCR engine does it use?

By default, PaddleOCR PP-OCRv5 for English, other Latin-script languages, Arabic and Telugu, and Tesseract 5 for Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada and Malayalam. Both are open source (Apache-2.0), and you can switch engine in the menu. We picked the default for each script by measuring both on the same test images.
