How to draw a radius on a map

  1. Type a ZIP code, “City, ST” or a street address and tap Show my area, or tap the map where the centre should go.
  2. The page starts with rings at 5, 10 and 25 miles. Type a distance into the ring box and press Enter to add one; remove a ring with its ×. Up to five rings, in miles or kilometres.
  3. Switch between the Clean and Streets map styles under the map.
  4. Add a title and tap Download PNG (1600 × 1200 or 1200 × 1200), with or without ring labels.

How big is a radius in practice?

RadiusArea coveredTypical use
5 mi (8 km)79 sq miDense city, walk-in or same-hour service
10 mi (16 km)314 sq miPlumbers, electricians, cleaners in a metro
25 mi (40 km)1,963 sq miRoofers, HVAC, landscapers across a metro
50 mi (80 km)7,854 sq miSpecialists and rural trades

Area grows with the square of the radius: doubling the radius quadruples the ground you promise to cover, and the drive time to the edge. Many service businesses use an inner ring for standard pricing and an outer ring with a trip charge.

A service area map for your website

The same rings make a service area map. Under the map you get the ZIP codes, cities and counties inside your outer ring, a CSV with distances in miles and km, and an Areas we serve HTML block that lists your towns as real text and can show the PNG. Need the list rather than the picture? Use ZIP codes within a radius. Setting up a Google profile? Pick your 20 Google Business Profile service areas.

Where the data comes from

ZIP code areas, places and counties come from the US Census Bureau’s 2024 Gazetteer files, ZIP-to-city and ZIP-to-county links from its 2020 relationship files, and populations from its Vintage 2024 estimates. All of it is public domain and ships with this page, so your lists are worked out on your device. The base map is from OpenFreeMap, built on OpenStreetMap data.

Questions people ask

Can I draw a radius on Google Maps?

Not directly: Google Maps has no circle or radius tool. You can measure a straight-line distance with right-click > Measure distance, but not draw a ring. This tool draws the ring for you on an OpenStreetMap-based map, and you can download it as an image.

Can I draw more than one radius?

Yes, up to five rings around the same centre. This page starts with 5, 10 and 25 miles. The outer ring is solid and inner rings are dashed, and each ring can be labelled on the exported image.

Is the radius straight-line or driving distance?

Straight-line (as the crow flies), measured on the curved Earth. Driving distance is usually 20 to 40 percent longer in towns and depends on roads, rivers and bridges. Drive-time maps need a routing service, and we only use free services whose terms allow it, so they are not offered yet.

Does it work in kilometres, and outside the US?

Yes to both. Switch the units to Km and labels show both units, for example “40 km · 25 mi”. The map and rings work anywhere if you tap the map or enter coordinates; the ZIP code, city and county lists use US Census data, so they are US only.

Is it free, and can I use the PNG on my website?

Yes. No sign-up, no limit on maps and no watermark of ours. Keep the small credit line in the corner: the map data is from OpenStreetMap and the style from OpenFreeMap and OpenMapTiles, and their licences require that credit.

Is my address stored?

No. ZIP codes and city names never leave your browser. A street address is sent once to OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service to find its location, and nothing is stored by us.
