How to unblur and upscale an image
- Drop your image into the box, paste it, or press Try a sample.
- Pick 2× or 4× and PNG or JPG. The readout shows the output size, the file size and how long it will take.
- Press Unblur and upscale. The model is 2.4 MB, so it starts almost at once.
- Compare and download. Drag the slider, view at 100% to check the detail, then save.
What makes it different
Your image is processed in the browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so it works for private and client images.
You see the output resolution, the file size and an estimate for your device before you press the button.
Free outputs up to 64 megapixels as PNG or JPG.
Real-ESRGAN, the open upscaler behind many paid apps, not a sharpening filter.
How long it takes
Real-ESRGAN general v3 is small (1.2 million parameters), so it's fast. The estimate under the tool is calibrated on our test PC and corrected from the first tiles of your own run.
Privacy
Your photo is opened, processed and saved by your browser on this page. It is not uploaded, stored or seen by anyone. The page downloads the model (2.4-4.9 MB) and the ONNX Runtime engine (about 7 MB compressed) from this site the first time and keeps them in your browser’s cache.
Credits and licences
- Real-ESRGAN general v3 (Wang, Xie, Dong and Shan, 2021), xinntao/Real-ESRGAN, BSD-3-Clause. ONNX export by vlad-grig (BSD-3-Clause), 2.4 MB (fp16) or 4.9 MB.
- ONNX Runtime Web (MIT) runs the models in your browser.
- Sample photo: a shop front made with an image generator, then shrunk, softened and compressed by our own script.
Questions people ask
Can you really unblur an image?
Partly. The model removes softness from resizing and compression, light focus blur, noise and JPEG blocks, and redraws clean edges. It can't recover detail that was never captured: heavy motion blur, a face that is a few pixels wide or text you can't read in the original will come out cleaner but not legible. Anyone who promises more is drawing a new picture.
Is it free?
Yes. 2× and 4× upscaling are free with no account, watermark or daily limit. Outputs go up to 64 megapixels.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once and runs on your own computer or phone, on the graphics card when your browser supports WebGPU and on the CPU otherwise. Your photo never leaves your device, and once the model is cached the tool works offline.
How long does it take?
Before you start, the tool shows the output size, the file size and an estimate for your device. On a graphics card a 1-megapixel photo takes a few seconds at either scale; on a CPU it takes about a minute per megapixel with one thread and much less with several.
2× or 4×?
Use 2× to sharpen a photo that's roughly the right size already, and 4× for a small image you need to print or use large. Both run the same model; 2× is the 4× result averaged down, which also hides the model's guesses.
What does it work best on?
Photos, screenshots of photos, product shots and scans. Very small images (under 300 pixels) improve the most. Line art and text get cleaner edges but no new detail.
Why is it slow on my computer?
The models run fastest on your graphics card through WebGPU (Chrome or Edge on desktop, Chrome on Android, Safari 26). Without WebGPU they run on the CPU, which is several times slower but gives the same result. The tool tells you which one it is using and how long the job will take before you start.
