How to convert Kruti Dev to Unicode

Convert a Word file without losing the layout
Most Kruti Dev converters only take pasted text, so tables, letterheads and page layout are lost. Why Kruti Dev needs converting
Kruti Dev 010 is a “font encoding” from the typewriter era. The file stores English keyboard characters and the font draws Hindi shapes over them, in the order a typist sees them. Unicode stores the Hindi letters themselves, in the order they are spoken. So converting is not a simple swap: the short-i matra typed before a consonant cluster has to move after it, the reph typed after a syllable has to move before it, and half letters joined to the k stem become full letters.

How to install the Kruti Dev 010 font
Kruti Dev text only looks like Hindi when the Kruti Dev 010 font is installed and selected. Without it you see letters such as Hkkjr. We do not host the font: its files carry a copyright notice but no licence terms, so we cannot redistribute it. Several state recruitment boards and departments offer it on their own “Hindi font” download pages (for example the Bihar Public Service Commission), or ask your office’s IT team or typing institute. Then:
- Windows: right-click the
.ttffile and choose Install (or Install for all users). Restart Word. - Mac: double-click the
.ttffile and click Install Font in Font Book. - Android / iPhone: phones cannot use Kruti Dev in most apps. Convert to Unicode instead: Unicode Hindi works everywhere without any font install.
Once it is installed, tick Show Kruti Dev text in the Kruti Dev font above the converter and the Kruti side shows real Hindi letters.
Accuracy and limits
- Tested both ways on more than 200 common Hindi words plus sentences, and every word survives a Unicode → Kruti Dev → Unicode round trip.
- English words inside Kruti Dev text get converted too, because Kruti Dev text is made of English letters. In a
.docxthis is avoided automatically, because only text in a Kruti Dev font is touched. - Rare Alt-code glyphs differ slightly between Kruti Dev versions. Read through names and numbers before you submit a document.

The converter moves the short-i matra (ि) from before its consonant cluster to after it, moves the reph (र्) from after its syllable to the front, joins half letters with the stem, and reads nukta (ज़, फ़, ड़), ligatures such as क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र, द्ध and क्र, and Hindi digits. It is tested on more than 200 word pairs both ways.
Will it work with Kruti Dev 016 or other Kruti Dev fonts?
