What the converter does to each word
Unicode stores Hindi in spoken order; Kruti Dev stores it in the order a typist sees the shapes. The converter puts the short-i matra (f) before its consonant cluster, moves the reph (Z) to after its syllable, writes full letters such as ख and श as a half letter plus the k stem, and picks the Kruti Dev codes for ligatures (क्र, त्र, द्ध, क्ष, ज्ञ).

How to install the Kruti Dev 010 font
Kruti Dev text only looks like Hindi when the Kruti Dev 010 font is installed and selected. Without it you see letters such as Hkkjr. We do not host the font: its files carry a copyright notice but no licence terms, so we cannot redistribute it. Several state recruitment boards and departments offer it on their own “Hindi font” download pages (for example the Bihar Public Service Commission), or ask your office’s IT team or typing institute. Then:
- Windows: right-click the
.ttffile and choose Install (or Install for all users). Restart Word. - Mac: double-click the
.ttffile and click Install Font in Font Book. - Android / iPhone: phones cannot use Kruti Dev in most apps. Convert to Unicode instead: Unicode Hindi works everywhere without any font install.
Once it is installed, tick Show Kruti Dev text in the Kruti Dev font above the converter and the Kruti side shows real Hindi letters.
Limits
- Kruti Dev has no codes for some rare Unicode characters (for example the avagraha ऽ and many Sanskrit-only signs). They are kept as they are.
- A colon is written as the visarga code, which is the closest Kruti Dev shape.
- English words inside Unicode text are kept as English letters, so in the Kruti Dev font they show as Hindi shapes. In a
.docx, English runs are left in their own font and are not affected.
