X (Twitter) card validator

Preview how your link will look on X before you post it, and fix the tags that make the card small or empty. Enter a URL or paste your HTML.

Works offline

We fetch the public page once, like a search engine would. Nothing is stored.

What makes a good X card

  • twitter:card set to summary_large_image. Without it you get a small thumbnail.
  • An image X can show large: at least 300 px wide (1200 × 630 is safest), as an absolute https:// address. Under 144 × 144 px X drops it.
  • A title short enough not to be cut off: X cuts at about 70 characters. X shows the domain and title on the image; the description is often hidden.
  • Alt text in twitter:image:alt or og:image:alt for people using screen readers.

The minimum tags for X

<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
<meta property="og:title" content="Spring AC tune-up for $89">
<meta property="og:description" content="A 21-point tune-up before the heat arrives.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://yoursite.com/share-1200x630.png">

X reads the og: tags for everything except the card type, so one set of tags covers X, Facebook, LinkedIn and the rest. The checker above shows every platform at once, with X first; the OG image size table lists the limits for the others.

X’s cache

X keeps a card for a while after it first sees a link. When you change your tags, post the link with a harmless query string such as ?v=2 to get a fresh card, or wait for X to fetch the page again.

Questions people ask

What happened to the official Twitter Card Validator?

X removed the preview from its Card Validator in 2022, so there is no official way to see a card before you post. This tool draws the X card from your tags, using X’s current layout, and lists what is missing.

Which twitter:card type should I use?

summary_large_image for almost every page: it shows a wide image above the title. summary shows a small square thumbnail. player and app cards need approval from X and are rarely used.

Do I need twitter:title and twitter:image if I have Open Graph tags?

No. X falls back to og:title, og:description and og:image. You only need twitter:card. Add twitter:* tags when you want X to show something different from other platforms.

Why does X show a small card instead of a big image?

Either twitter:card is missing or set to summary, or the image is narrower than X’s large-card minimum. The checker tells you which.

Does twitter:site matter?

It attributes the card to your X account. It is optional and does not change how the card looks in most places.

How do I refresh a card X has cached?

X fetches cards again after some time. Adding a harmless query string to the URL you post (for example ?v=2) makes X treat it as a new link.
