How to mask a CNIC

  1. Open a photo or scan of your CNIC above, or try the made-up sample card.
  2. The identity number is boxed automatically. It is recognised by its 5-7-1 layout (12345-1234567-1), or as 13 digits on a card that says “Identity Number”.
  3. Draw extra boxes over your photo, address or signature if you like.
  4. Tap Mask and check. The new file is read again with OCR; download it once it shows 0 numbers readable.

Before you share a copy of your CNIC

  • Ask whether the full number is needed. A shop, landlord or event may only need to see your name and photo; a bank or government office may need the whole card.
  • Write the purpose on the copy, for example “For tenancy at House 12 only, Nov 2026”, so it is harder to reuse.
  • Send the masked file, not the original photo, and delete the original from chats where you no longer need it.

Why it is safe to use

The card never leaves your device: OCR runs in your browser. The mask is painted into the pixels and the photo is saved again, which also removes location data from your phone camera. PDFs are rebuilt as images, so no copy of the number is left in a hidden text layer.

Questions people ask

How do I mask my CNIC number?

Open a photo, scan or PDF of your CNIC in the tool on this page. It finds the 13-digit identity number, printed like 12345-1234567-1, and covers it. Tap Mask and check, then download the masked copy.

Does it work on the back of the CNIC?

Yes. Any copy of the 13-digit number it can read is masked, on either side. Photograph each side or mask them one at a time.

What does the masked number look like?

You choose: XXXXX-XXXXXXX-X printed over the card in its own background colour, or a solid black bar. Either way the digits are replaced in the pixels, not covered by a removable layer.

Is my CNIC uploaded?

No. The card is read and masked in your browser. Once the page says it is ready, it works with the internet switched off.

Can I hide my photo, address or signature too?

Yes. Drag on the card to draw a box over anything you do not want to share.
