Remove a person from a photo

Erase a photobomber or a stranger in the background in four steps. The tool is right here and runs on your device.

Step by step

  1. Open the photo in the tool above. Large phone photos are fine; they are processed at full size.
  2. Paint over the person, and include their shadow on the ground and any reflection in water or glass. Leave a little margin around them.
  3. Press Remove and look at the result. If something remains (a foot, a bag strap), paint over just that part and remove again.
  4. Download the cleaned photo at its original resolution.

Tips for a clean result

  • Shadows give it away. A missing person with their shadow still on the sand looks strange. Paint the shadow too.
  • Small passes beat one big one. The model sees the area around each selection; smaller selections give it more real context.
  • Straight lines are hard. Railings, horizons and building edges behind the person may come back slightly bent. A second pass over just the kink usually fixes it.
  • Be fair to people. Removing a stranger from your holiday photo is fine. Editing someone out of a group photo you then share as the real event is a different thing.

Privacy

Your photo is opened, processed and saved by your browser on this page. It is not uploaded, stored or seen by anyone. The page downloads the model (28 MB) and the ONNX Runtime engine (about 7 MB compressed) from this site the first time and keeps them in your browser’s cache.

Credits and licences

  • MI-GAN (Sargsyan, Navasardyan, Xu and Shi, ICCV 2023) by Picsart AI Research, Picsart-AI-Research/MI-GAN, MIT licence. ONNX pipeline file published by the first author (andraniksargsyan/migan), 28 MB. Trained on the Places2 dataset.
  • ONNX Runtime Web (MIT) runs the models in your browser.

Questions people ask

How do I remove a person from a photo for free?

Drop the photo into the tool on this page, paint over the person and their shadow, and press Remove. It's free with no account or watermark, and you download the full-resolution photo.

Can I remove someone standing right next to me?

Yes, but the closer and larger the person, the more the model has to invent. If they overlap you, paint carefully along the edge with a small brush, and remove them in two or three passes: first the parts against the background, then the rest.

How do I remove people from a crowded tourist photo?

Remove one or two people at a time, starting with the ones furthest away, and check each fill before the next. A crowd in front of a detailed building is the hardest case; a few passes with Undo work better than one huge selection.

Will anyone be able to tell?

On a plain background such as sky, sea, sand or grass, usually not. On a detailed background, look closely at the filled area at 100% before you share it.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once and runs on your own computer or phone, on the graphics card when your browser supports WebGPU and on the CPU otherwise. Your photo never leaves your device, and once the model is cached the tool works offline.
