How Indian statements are read

Statements from Indian banks usually print seven columns: Date, Narration (or Particulars, Description), Chq./Ref.No., Value Dt, Withdrawal Amt., Deposit Amt. and Closing Balance. Others use Debit, Credit and Balance with CR or DR after the balance. Both layouts are found from the header row, whatever the bank.

  • Dates are read day-first: 03/10/26 is 3 October 2026.
  • Lakh and crore grouping (1,23,456.78) is understood.
  • A balance marked DR is an overdraft and is stored as a negative number.
  • Reference numbers and value dates are ignored, not mistaken for amounts.
  • Multi-line UPI, NEFT, RTGS and IMPS narrations are joined into one row.

Try it on the India sample

Tap India under the drop box to convert a sample statement from a fictional bank: 62 transactions over two pages, with wrapped UPI narrations, 16-digit reference numbers and an opening balance row.

Password-protected statements

E-statements sent by email are often locked. When you drop one in, the converter asks for the password, opens the file in your browser and carries on. The password is not stored and not sent anywhere; close the tab and it is gone.

Questions people ask

My e-statement PDF is password-protected. What do I do?

Enter the password when the converter asks for it. Banks usually build it from part of your name, date of birth, customer ID or account number; the email that came with the statement says which. The password is used by your browser to open the file and is never sent anywhere.

Are amounts like 1,23,456.78 read correctly?

Yes. Indian digit grouping (lakhs and crores) is read as the number it is, so 1,23,456.78 becomes 123456.78 in the spreadsheet, ready to sum.

What happens to the Chq./Ref.No. and Value Dt columns?

They are recognised as reference columns and left out, so a 16-digit reference number is never mistaken for an amount. The transaction date and the narration are kept.

Long UPI and NEFT narrations wrap over several lines. Are they kept whole?

Yes. Continuation lines are joined to the transaction they belong to, so each UPI, NEFT, IMPS or ATM entry is one row with its full narration.

Can I use the Excel file for my ITR or a loan application?

You can use it to total income, interest and large credits. Lenders and the tax department usually still want the original bank PDF itself, so keep that too.

Is my statement uploaded?

No. It is read in your browser and the spreadsheet is built on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
