How to get a CSV from a bank statement PDF
- Drop the statement PDF on the box above.
- Check the balance readout. Green means every row adds up.
- Tap Download CSV. The file is named after the bank and the statement dates, for example
northwind-community-bank-statement-2026-10-01_2026-10-31.csv.
What the CSV looks like
Date,Description,Money out,Money in,Amount,Balance,Balance check 2026-10-01,ACH DEBIT MAPLE MUTUAL AUTO INSURANCE PREMIUM,78.19,,-78.19,3172.21,OK 2026-10-03,MOBILE CHECK DEPOSIT,,1117.88,1117.88,3636.99,OK
That is from the US checking sample above, a statement from a fictional bank. Dates are ISO (YYYY-MM-DD), so there is no confusion between 10/03 and 03/10. Descriptions that wrapped over several lines on the PDF are joined into one cell.
CSV or Excel?
Choose CSV to import into accounting or budgeting software, or to process with a script. Choose Excel to work with the data yourself: the .xlsx has real dates, number formatting, filters on every column, and a second sheet with the opening and closing balances, totals and the result of the balance check.
Read before you import
If the balance check shows rows that do not reconcile, fix them in the grid first. Importing a statement with a misread amount into your books creates a reconciliation problem later, and it is much quicker to fix it now with the PDF open. See how to check a converted statement.
Matching payments to bills? Turn PDF invoices into CSV too, one row per invoice or per line item, so both files share ISO dates and plain numbers.
Questions people ask
What columns are in the CSV?
Date (as YYYY-MM-DD), Description, Money out, Money in, Amount (money in minus money out, so debits are negative), Balance (as printed on the statement) and Balance check (OK, Does not reconcile, or Not checked).
Will the CSV open correctly in Excel?
Yes. The file is UTF-8 with a byte-order mark, so Excel shows £, ₹ and accented names correctly, and amounts are plain numbers with two decimals and no currency symbols, so they sum without cleaning.
Is it safe to open the CSV?
Text that starts with =, +, - or @ is prefixed with an apostrophe so a spreadsheet cannot run it as a formula. Bank descriptions rarely look like that, but it removes the risk of CSV formula injection.
Can I import the CSV into QuickBooks, Xero or YNAB?
Yes. Most accounting and budgeting apps accept a CSV with a date, a description and either one signed amount column or separate money in and money out columns. This file has both, so map whichever your app asks for.
Is the statement uploaded to make the CSV?
No. The PDF is read and the CSV is written by your own browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.
