The UK statement layout, and how it is read
Most UK current account statements print five columns: Date, Payment type and details, Paid out, Paid in and Balance. They have three habits that trip up simple converters, and this one handles each:
- One date per day. Only the first payment of a day shows the date. The rest inherit it.
- One balance per day. The balance appears after the last payment of the day. The day is checked as a group against it.
- Two-line payments. Some payments put the payee on one line and the reference with the amount on the next. Both lines become one row.
Payment codes such as DD (Direct Debit), SO (standing order), BP (bill payment), CR (credit), VIS (Visa) and ))) (contactless) are kept at the start of the description, so you can sort or filter by them in Excel.
Try it on the UK sample
Tap UK current account under the drop box to convert a sample statement from a fictional bank. It has 44 payments over two pages, with one date and one balance per day, brought-forward and carried-forward lines, and two-line payments.
Using the spreadsheet
The Excel file has real dates and amounts as numbers, so you can sum a month’s Direct Debits, pivot by payee or paste it into a self-assessment workbook without cleaning. For bookkeeping software, the CSV has both a signed Amount column and separate Money in and Money out columns.
Questions people ask
My statement only shows the date on the first payment of each day. Does that work?
Yes. Payments without a date take the date of the payment above them, which is how UK statements are meant to be read.
The balance is only printed once a day. Can it still check every row?
Yes. All the payments of a day are checked together against the balance printed at the end of that day. If that day does not add up, every payment in it is highlighted, so you only need to compare that day with the PDF.
What about BALANCE BROUGHT FORWARD and CARRIED FORWARD lines?
They are not transactions, so they are left out of the spreadsheet. The first brought-forward balance is used as the opening balance and the last carried-forward balance as the closing balance for the check.
Are dates read as day-first?
Yes. Dates like 03 Oct 26 or 03/10/2026 are read as 3 October. When a statement prints no year, it is taken from the statement period.
Is my statement uploaded?
No. It is read in your browser and the spreadsheet is built on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to create.
