How it works
Katha (also kattha, kanthā or cottah) is the everyday plot unit in eastern India, and its size changes a lot between states. West Bengal’s cottah of 720 sq ft (20 to the bigha) comes from Calcutta High Court and Supreme Court judgments. Jharkhand’s katha is 66.89 m², also 720 sq ft, in the national land-records data standard.
Bihar’s government glossary gives about 1,361 sq ft for the kattha in and around Patna and says it varies by region, and Assam’s katha is 2,880 sq ft (5 katha to the bigha, 20 lessa to the katha).

Where the katha figures come from
“Read in full” means we read the whole document. “Needs a check from India” means the figure and quote came from a search index of the government page at that link, because Indian government sites refused connections from our research machine; those 7 documents still need opening from an Indian connection to confirm the quote.
