How it works
A marla is 9 sarsai, and a sarsai is one square karam. On the standard 66-inch (5.5 ft) karam, that gives 9 × 5.5 × 5.5 = 272.25 sq ft. Punjab, Haryana (after consolidation) and Jammu & Kashmir use this marla, and 20 marla make a kanal.
The Punjab town-planning department’s conversion chart also lists tracts settled with a 60-inch karam (marla of 225 sq ft), a 57.5-inch karam (about 206.6 sq ft) and the former Kapurthala state’s 54-inch karam (182.25 sq ft). The 225 sq ft marla is also a common convention in Pakistan.

Where the marla figures come from
“Read in full” means we read the whole document. “Needs a check from India” means the figure and quote came from a search index of the government page at that link, because Indian government sites refused connections from our research machine; those 2 documents still need opening from an Indian connection to confirm the quote.
