From a stack of receipts to one spreadsheet

  1. Photograph each receipt flat, in good light. On a phone, tap Take photo above; on a computer, drop the photos.
  2. The receipts are read one by one with OCR in your browser. The first one downloads the reading model, once.
  3. Each receipt shows its arithmetic check: items + tax (+ tip) = total.
  4. Fix anything flagged by clicking the right number on the photo.
  5. Download Excel: one row per receipt, plus a sheet with every item.

Both rows come from the fictional sample receipts you can try above. Dates are real Excel dates and amounts are numbers, so you can sum, filter and pivot straight away.

Tips for better photos

  • Lay the receipt flat on a darker surface so its edges are clear.
  • Fill the frame with the receipt; you do not need the table around it.
  • Avoid shadows across the totals. Thermal paper fades: photograph receipts soon after you get them.
  • Long receipts: take the photo from a little further away rather than cutting off the total.

Have the receipt as a PDF (from email or a web shop)? Those are read from their text layer, which is faster and exact. See invoice to Excel.

Questions people ask

How do I turn a receipt photo into an Excel row?

Drop the photo on the box above, or tap Take photo on your phone. The receipt is read with OCR in your browser, and the store, date, items, tax, tip and total appear next to the photo. Check anything marked Check or Low, then tap Download Excel.

Can I do a pile of receipts at once?

Yes, up to 10 at a time on the free version. Each receipt becomes one row on the Invoices sheet and its items go on the Line items sheet, so a month of receipts becomes one workbook. Download, start over, and do the next 10.

What if the photo is blurry or tilted?

Slight tilts are straightened automatically. Blurry or faded text gets a lower confidence score, and the arithmetic check shows when a number was misread. Click the field and then the right number on the photo, or type it. For best results, photograph the receipt flat, in good light, filling the frame.

Is a receipt photo uploaded?

No. The OCR model runs inside your browser tab. The photo is never sent anywhere, and there is no account. The model itself (about 31 MB) is downloaded once from this site and kept by your browser.

Does it handle tips and VAT-included prices?

Yes. Restaurant tips are read as their own field and included in the total check. UK and EU receipts that print “VAT included” are recognised, so the VAT is not added a second time.

Can I use it for expense reports?

Yes: the Excel file has one row per receipt with vendor, date, currency, tax and total, which is what most expense templates ask for. The line items sheet keeps the detail if you need it.
