Clean up

UPSC’s online application asks for a photograph and a signature image, each a JPG of at least 20 KB and at most 300 KB (Appendix-IIA of the Engineering Services 2027 notice). You also capture a live photo in the form, and the uploaded photo should look like it: same glasses, same beard.

The signature is unusual. UPSC asks you to sign three times, one below the other, on plain white paper in black ink, and to upload all three as one image. Pick UPSC · Signature (three times), draw the box around all three, and Signature mode keeps them together on white.

If your form also asks for a certificate or ID document as a PDF under a size limit, compress the PDF to a set KB in the same way, without uploading it.

UPSC upload sizes

Every row comes from the exam's own notice, linked with the date we read it. Pick a row to load it into the tool. Notices change each year, so check the one for your exam before you upload.

How to do it

  1. Photo: add a recent, clear photo. The UPSC photo preset is selected, at 400 × 500 px and 20–300 KB.
  2. Drag the crop box so your head and shoulders sit in the middle, then download.
  3. Signature: sign three times, one below the other, in black ink on white paper, and photograph the page.
  4. Switch to UPSC · Signature (three times), add the photo of the page, and download.

How it hits the size

The tool saves your image as a JPG again and again at different quality levels, halving the gap each time, until it finds the highest quality that fits under the maximum. That takes about ten tries and usually well under a second. If you set an exact pixel size it never changes it; with "Any size" it shrinks the pixels instead of letting the picture go blocky.

Forms disagree on whether 1 KB is 1,000 or 1,024 bytes, so we count the maximum as 1,000 bytes and the minimum as 1,024. A file that passes our check passes either way. If your image is too simple to reach a minimum even at top quality, we add blank data inside the file (a JPEG comment) to reach it; the picture does not change.

Private by design

Your photo never leaves your phone or computer. The resizing, cropping and signature clean-up all run in your browser, so it works on a slow connection and nothing is stored anywhere. The download is free, with no watermark and no sign-up.

Questions people ask

What is the UPSC photo size in KB?

At least 20 KB and at most 300 KB, as a JPG, for both the photo and the signature (ESE 2027 notice, Appendix-IIA).

What pixel size should the UPSC photo be?

The notice we read gives no pixel size. The preset uses 400 × 500 px, a passport shape that stays clear at 20 KB and well under 300 KB. If the form shows a size, enter it under Exact size.

Why does UPSC want three signatures in one image?

That is the rule in the notice: sign three times, one below the other, on plain white paper in black ink. Upload them as one image; the tool keeps all three together when you crop around them.

My photo comes out under 20 KB. What now?

A small, simple photo can be under the minimum even at top quality. The tool then adds blank data inside the file to reach 20 KB, without changing the picture.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser and your photo stays on your device.
